A case of hypothermia with significant Osborn Wave: a forgotten electrocardiographic finding

چکیده
Hypothermia is generally defined as the body's internal temperature below 35 °C. Hypothermia is classified as primer and secondary hypothermia according to its mechanism, and as mild (32 to 35 °C), moderate (32-28 °C) and severe (below 28°C) hypothermia according to body temperature. The characteristic electrocardiographic finding of the hypothermia is the Osborn (j) wave, which is manifested as a small positive deflection wave (late delta wave) at the junction corresponding to the end of the QRS complex and the beginning of the ST segment in two consecutive beats. In this article, we aimed to present a case of 68year-old man, who was found in cold weather, having lost consciousness and hypothermia, and whose electrocardiogram showed an Osborn wave which was resolved with the increase of body temperature.

Case of Recurrent Ventricular Fibrillations with Osborn Wave Developed during Therapeutic Hypothermia
Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been used to protect neurological functions in cardiac arrest patient. Although Osborn wave is not pathognomonic of hypothermia, it is a well-known electrocardiogram finding of hypothermic patients. The cellular and ionic mechanisms of the Osborn wave have been suggested, and its relationship to tachyarrhythmias, such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular f...
متن کاملDynamic J-Point Elevation Associated with Epileptic Hemiplegia: The Osborn Wave of Todd's Paralysis
THIS CASE REPORT EXPOSES A PHENOMENON WHICH, ALTHOUGH PROPOSED, HAS NOT BEEN DESCRIBED IN CLINICAL LITERATURE: transient postictal hemiplegia (Todd's paralysis) with concomitant electrocardiographic J-point deflection (Osborn waves). Although typically associated with hypothermia, a prominent J-wave on the electrocardiogram (ECG) results from a transmyocardial voltage gradient during ventricula...
متن کاملElectrocardiographic Manifestations in three Psychiatric patients with Hypothermia - Case Report.
Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature falls below 35°C, which, in severe cases, can lead to electrocardiographic changes. Several conditions that occur in the psychiatric population increase the risk of hypothermia. This risk can be further increased by the use of several classes of medications such as antipsychotics, beta-adrenergic antagonists and benzodiazepines. We report on thr...
متن کاملElectrocardiographic changes in therapeutic hypothermia
INTRODUCTION During therapeutic hypothermia (TH), electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities such as Osborn waves and/or ST-segment elevation have been described. However, the incidence and prognostic value of these ECG changes are uncertain given the small-scale studies that have been carried out to date. The aim of this study is to further evaluate the electrocardiographic changes during TH. ...
متن کاملGiant J (Osborn) Wave due to Bonsai Abuse: Comments on Clinical Practice
BACKGROUND Osborn wave, typically associated with hypothermia, is currently referred to as one of the J wave syndromes due to its clinical potential to develop lethal cardiac arrhythmia; it may rarely be observed in a non-hypothermic setting such as cannabis abuse. CASE REPORT In this paper, we presented two young cases who presented to the emergency services with unconsciousness, drowsiness,...
